Harish Rana Wishes Death: How much time does Harish Rana have left? Life support systems will be gradually withdrawn—find out what the doctors' plan is. Harish Rana Wishes Death: The process for Harish Rana's voluntary euthanasia has commenced at AIIMS, Delhi. Following approval from the Supreme Court, a specialized team of doctors is currently engaged in the process of gradually withdrawing his life support systems. Experts emphasize that special care is being taken to ensure the patient does not experience any form of suffering. According to sources, the entire medical procedure is expected to take approximately two to three weeks to complete. This marks the first instance in the country where a patient is being granted voluntary euthanasia. The most pressing question now is: how long will it take for this process to conclude? According to physicians at AIIMS, this is not an instantaneous procedure; rather, it is carried out in multiple stages with the utmost caution and sensitivity. After receiving the Supreme Court's permission for voluntary euthanasia, Harish Rana has now been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), a prestigious medical institution in Delhi. According to doctors and sources, the entire process in Harish's case is expected to span approximately two to three weeks. Following the Supreme Court's directive, a specialized team of doctors has been constituted at AIIMS specifically for this procedure. This team is being led by Dr. Seema Mishra, Professor and Head of the Department of Anaesthesia and Palliative Medicine. The team comprises specialists in neurosurgery, onco-anaesthesia, and other related fields. According to agency reports, physicians associated with AIIMS state that the process of voluntary euthanasia does not occur abruptly. Instead, it is carried out gradually and under strict medical supervision. According to Dr. Sushma Bhatnagar, former Head of the Department of Onco-Anaesthesia, Pain, and Palliative Care at AIIMS, the primary objective of this procedure is to ensure that the patient remains free from pain and suffering at all times. Physicians explain that the first step involves a detailed assessment of the patient's current medical condition. This process involves assessing the type of life-sustaining support currently being provided to the patient and determining how the procedure for withdrawing it can be initiated. Subsequently, artificial nutrition and other supportive systems are gradually tapered off. Concurrently, the patient is administered pain-relieving medications and palliative sedation to ensure they do not experience any discomfort or distress. According to physicians, when life-sustaining equipment is withdrawn... Harish Rana: An Estimated Two to Three Weeks for Harish's Case According to sources associated with AIIMS, the entire process in Harish Rana's case is expected to span two to three weeks. Throughout this period, doctors will continuously monitor his physical condition. Should any medical complications arise at any stage, the treatment or procedure may be modified accordingly. Doctors emphasize that this timeframe is merely an estimate; every patient's condition is unique, and the pace of the process is determined by their specific circumstances. Harish Rana: In a Coma for 13 Years Harish Rana has been in a coma for approximately the last 13 years. In 2013, he was a B.Tech student at Punjab University. At that time, he sustained severe head injuries after falling from a fourth-floor balcony. Since the accident, his condition has remained critical, and he slipped into a coma. Although he continued to receive medical treatment over these years, he never regained consciousness. He was kept alive through artificial nutrition and intermittent oxygen support. Multiple teams of doctors periodically assessed his condition, but the consistent conclusion was that the likelihood of his brain function ever recovering was extremely low. His father, Ashok Rana, approached the courts and sought permission for euthanasia. Harish Rana: Supreme Court's Historic Verdict On March 11, delivering a landmark judgment in this case, the Supreme Court granted permission for euthanasia to Harish Rana. The Court stated that if the Medical Board determines that the patient's condition is irreversible and there is no possibility of improvement through treatment, the process of withdrawing life support may be initiated. However, the Court also clarified that this does not constitute active euthanasia. It does not involve administering death through any medication or injection; rather, the means artificially sustaining life are gradually withdrawn to allow the natural process of death to take its course. The Court further ensured that the entire process be conducted with the utmost care and dignity. In accordance with this directive, AIIMS-Delhi has been entrusted with the responsibility of implementing this procedure. Harish Rana: Spiritual support was also received.
